Agriculture addresses a basic need: Food and nutrition security for a population expected to reach 9.6 billion by 2050. It offers essential commodities, employment, and environmental services that facilitate economic and social development.
Agriculture is one of Vietnam’s economic mainstays with the sector accounting for almost 20% of gross domestic product. The sector also currently employs nearly half of the country’s workforce. Agriculture also accounts for 80% of water use and over 20% of greenhouse gas emissions. It contributes to and is threatened by climate change, which disproportionately affects the 22.5 million smallholder farmers who produce over 90% of the food in the country.
